Les Arcs now has a firmly established reputation as one of the best mountain biking destinations in the French Alps. The quality and quantity of trails in this area is just outstanding – riding with our fully-qualified guides, you could spend an entire week here, in fact, even more than that, and not ride the same trail twice.
With the highest lift-accessed point at around 2700m, riding all the way back down to the valley floor at 800m on some of the finest singletrack around is really not all that difficult in Les Arcs. If you throw in a little climb part way down, you can increase that 1900m of descent quite easily to well over 2000m. You could even do this several times, each time on a different trail.
Sometimes though, it’s not all about big numbers. Sometimes it’s about flowing singletrack, beautiful views, and really taking the time to appreciate where you are and whether you enjoy untouched singletrack deep in the woods, or riding through beautiful alpine meadows, you’ll love Les Arcs. This area has one other unique attraction – its proximity to a whole bunch of other awesome riding areas. If you’re still full of beans on chalet day off, it’s really not difficult to pop over to La Thuile for the day, nip up to Tignes/Val d’Isere, or swing round to Méribel. You could even do a day trip into the fantastic Aosta Valley from here.
Ability & Fitness Level:
To really enjoy your holiday in Les Arcs, we’d recommend that you should be a good Intermediate level rider or above, as outlined in our handy guide below. All of the trails we ride are completely natural and may feature typical alpine challenges, such as switchbacks, rocky sections, some sections of exposed trail (i.e with a drop to one side) and some sections of steep descent.
We’ll use the funicular train and chairlifts around Les Arcs and La Plagne to gain height as efficiently as possible, but there are times when we’ll need to do a bit of on-bike ascent to reach those extra-special trails which are a little more off the beaten track. We’d recommend you be comfortable with up to 500m of ascent per day (1-1.5h climbing in total). Whilst we won’t often do that much climbing, having the fitness there just means you’ll have more energy to enjoy every single day to the max.
Ability levels are classified as follows:
- Beginner: Little experience of singletracks. Maybe you have plenty of experience riding on wider paths off road but you rarely ride on narrow singletracks.
- Intermediate: You usually ride singletrack but if it’s steep or rocky you might walk some sections. You probably enjoy the blue and red marked routes at a trail centre.
- Advanced: You rarely walk sections, you enjoy the hardest routes at trail centres and seek out technical challenges. You’ve probably been biking in the Alps before.
- Expert: You’re able to tackle technical sections with speed and commitment. For you it’s not just about riding a section, it’s about how much speed and flow you can carry.
- Pro: You can ride literally everything! Riding is your job either racing, guiding or teaching.
